In parallel with offering climate solutions to all clients, COWI in Oman has for several years now been working hard at reducing its internal workspace carbon footprint within various activities.
Thanks to this multidimensional approach to leave a green mark on its surrounding environment, COWI Oman was recently awarded a Special Commendation in the "Green Footprint Award" category, part of the Oman Green Awards initiative.
First of its kind in the SultanateOrganized for the first time, the Oman Green Awards aim at raising the level of environmental awareness and creating behavioral changes to conserve and protect the environment.
The initiative is supported by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA), the Ministry of Health, Muscat Municipality and the Environment Society of Oman.
The green awards show took place on 5 June at the Al Bustan Palace Hotel in Muscat and celebrated a long list of green companies in Oman within nine different award categories.
His Excellency Mohammed bin Salim bin Said Al Toobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs, distributed the awards attended by dignitaries and representatives of different organisations.
A new environmentally friendly COWI office in Muscat
The significant point of COWI's submission to the Green Awards committee was the moving to a new office in July this year. The new environmentally friendly premises have been designed and supervised by COWI itself and will produce a big improvement in COWI Oman's carbon emissions.
Other green COWI actions in Oman include
- school visits to explain and promote carbon footprint calculation
- monthly meetings to guide and focus the broad range of activities now happening
- changing business communication techniques to be more efficient
- an ideas box in the office has been started and carbon saving ideas have been adopted
- changing office environment and habits
- looking to adopt low carbon products for projects
- further developing COWI's own expertise in low energy solutions
COWI will obviously keep working on further improving internal green actions in the future, while at the same time keep focusing on the important green and sustainable solutions to all clients.
