Royal Opera House Muscat - the Omani capital's new impressive landmark
Muscat's new Royal Opera House - a prominent COWI & Partners project - welcomed its very first guests in glorious surroundings last week.
The building of the new Royal Opera House in the heart of the Omani capital Muscat was first announced back in 2001 by the Royal Court Affairs (RCA). Three years later, in 2004, the first design phase took off with WATG Architect as the lead designer.

COWI was contracted as a sub-consultant, along with other sub-consultants, in 2007 when construction of the edifice began, providing the engineering consultancy including structures, mechanical & electrical services, fire and life safety plus other related disciplines.

Today, ten years after the very first thought of Oman's premier venue for musical arts and culture, this prestigious Muscat landmark is now successfully completed.

To celebrate the very first rising of the royal curtain, the new opera house last week put on a performance of Turendot, with the orchestra conducted by Placido Domingo.

Among the specially invited clientele were, beside those involved in the construction works of the impressive structure, HM the Sultan, heads of state, Duke and Duchess of Kent from the British Royal family and a long list of VIPs.

The Royal Opera House Muscat has an extremely flexible 1,000-seat performance space and will be hosting a variety of cultural events - from symphony concerts, recitals, chamber music and fully staged productions of opera, dance, musicals and other aspects of more popular entertainment.
