The CBO expansion and renovation project involved the design and construction of a large new facility as well as complete reorganisation and renovation of the existing building. This refurbishment work included modification of the facades so as to be compatible with the new building.
The new building occupied a site on the other side of a public road from the old building, and the new development includes both a bridge and a tunnel to unite the two, the road now being retained as a V.I.P. entrance to the complex.
Refurbishment of the existing building
COWI was responsible for the complete design of the new building and the renovation and refurbishment of the existing building, as well as construction supervision and project management of the internal refurbishment of the existing building.
Icon of modern Omani architecture The building at the time set a standard for modern Omani architecture. A particular feature of the main façade and the bridge above the access road is the stained glass window assembly. These richly coloured ornamental windows are 21m high. The imposing doors to the two main entrances are cast in bronze and were designed and crafted in Oman by a specialist metalworking company. Along with a working and chiming clock these features perfectly integrate with the design of the main façade, making the new bank complex an outstanding icon of modern Omani architecture.
The project was completed over a 3 year period, the entire process being undertaken whilst the bank remained in occupation, maintaining its normal operations.
