A modest three bedroom apartment which served both as an office and as the residence for COWI's sole employee in the country, was our humble beginnings. Today we number almost 200 in our design office, this number being doubled when considering COWI's large airport project office.
Our first assignment was for the Oman Government's Planning Committee and was the establishment of planning and development projects for Salalah and surrounding Dhofar region in the south of Oman.
Following this initial success, COWI quickly secured other projects in the late 1980s, including the redevelopment of Nizwa Town and Souq (for which we were nominated for the Aga Khan award), the Raysut industrial estate project in Salalah and the five year development plan of the country's three northern regions, Ash-Sharqiyah, A'Dakhliyah and A'Dhahira.
Supported by our experience in Bahrain, COWI's concrete technology expertise enabled the securing of repair and strengthening contracts with among others the Diwan of Royal Court, Oman Refinery and Ministry of Defense on projects from Goat Island north of the peninsula of Musandam, to Masiarah off the East coast to Raysut harbour on the border with Yemen.
Manifold references Our presence is highlighted by many prominent projects in Oman wide ranging in their type. The Central Bank of Oman, Nizwa Souq and University, hotels, the new Seeb and Salalah airports, major highway projects, ports of Muttrah and Salalah and flood protection of the town of Dibba. Many of our works are presented on the present Rial currency notes.
